Momentum = “Periode waarin een duidelijke beweging is te zien”

Ik heb even al mijn vingers en tenen samengelegd en ja hoor, dit jaar is nog maar 13 dagen ver. Maar in die korte tijd is er toch al een ongelooflijke “buzz” geweest rond alles wat met kinderen, jongeren en technologie te maken heeft.

Ik ben helemaal geen full-time communicatiespecialist of trendwatcher maar gewoon iemand met een (on)gezonde interesse voor al wat leeft en evolueert op dat wereldwijde web. En zo pik ik nu en dan wel eens iets op waar ik verder mee wil gaan. Voor 2013 was dat dus CoderDojo en al die dingen die er gebeuren rond kinderen, jongeren en technologie.

I don’t like to complain and certainly not on a blog, but… this time my frustrations reached a boiling point.

Is het niet de regel van een goede blog dat je er regelmatig iets op zet? Ik ben niet goed bezig dus… Maar ik heb een excuus, CoderDojo slorpt heel veel tijd op :-)

Het is nu drie weken geleden dat ik “met de ogen dicht en de voeten vooruit” in CoderDojo gesprongen ben. En ik moet zeggen dat ik nog iedere dag verbaasd sta van de positieve reacties die dit initiatief krijgt.

“Practice what you preach” is een uitspraak die ik nu wel moet in praktijk brengen. Genoeg geblogged en getwitterd over al die initiatieven om kinderen interesse te laten krijgen in technologie en programmeren. Het is tijd voor actie, of anders gezegd, genoeg bla-bla, tijd voor boem-boem!

As I blogged before (Education or how it all started and Terug naar school?!) I find it important to integrate the wonderful world of technology into school lessons for kids of all ages. And apparently I’m not alone as mentioned in those earlier posts.

In school and the professional world we all have to give presentations. Some of us love it, some hate it, but we all use Powerpoint for it. Personally I have a love-hate relationship with that program but must admit that it’s the easiest way to quickly collect the information you want to show. Maybe Bunkr is a good alternative to Powerpoint, but have to try it out myself first… But let me share some things to make presentations more fun for everyone (presenter and viewers!).

Big data <> Open data

“Big data” is one of those other trending topics. You could link it to “open data” I blogged about some time ago. The idea behind open data is that different organisations, companies, … give others access to their data so it becomes available to developers who can build something with it. But you can imagine that all those different databases will result in one gigantic data source.

What is it?

The internet is no longer a network of computers only. Smartphones, tables and more and more devices are connected to that same internet: security cameras, lights, domotica in your house, … and are exchanging information. A security camera can send you and sms if something is happening, but can at the same time switch on the lights, start the alarm, close the windows, etc. And while driving home you can start the heating and fill your bath with an app on your smartphone.
