Visual Studio 2005 - OutputPath property is not set

2012-05-25 09:02:41
This post is a reminder for myself if I should have this error again in the future. I think (and hope) that not many still use Visual Studio 2005. But because I have to do maintenance and bug fixing on some older projects, I still use it...

I've just been struggling with this error message for a few hours:

The OutputPath property is not set for this project. Please check to make sure that you have specified a valid Configuration/Platform combination. Configuration='' Platform='AnyCPU'

First thing to do is read the error message and search for a solution for the problem that's mentioned. So I checked all OutputPath properties but they all seemed OK. So changed them, got angry, changed them again and got more angry and frustrated because nothing changed.

Thanks to my best friend, Mr. Google, I finally found the solution: broken references!

As some of the projects in this solution are shared with other solutions, two references got broken. By just removing them and adding again, the problem was solved!
